Now here is one guy who can sing. Blessed with a voice from heaven, Soren Sko should pack up his bags and head off to Nashville, where he'd be a superstar for sure! Primarily a duo, though uncanningly backed by a series of Danish and Swedish musicians who you'd think were born and bred from all points between Iowa and Indiana, such is the strong mid-west theme running throughout this album. A credit to them though, that this album 'Familiar Roads' spans a range of styles running from pure heartland style AOR through to tasteful blues with a touch of gospel thrown in for good measure. Don't let the latter put you off, because Soren's vocal delivery keeps the melodic aspect at the forefront.

The Songs
A classic opener in 'Closer To Me', sees a delicious backwash of keyboards and piano cascading over a simple accoustic guitar melody, with that smooth vocal ever present. Things rock up a bit for 'You Read My Moods' while we melt into the heartland again with the title track 'Familiar Roads'. This is lovely AOR for summertime listening. God, listen to that voice!! If you could imagine Toys Of Joy doing a new country song then this is what it would sound like. 'Dolphin Girl' is somewhat more mellow before we blues out with 'Sorrow City'. We pay another visit to the heartland with 'Glorious Days', 'I Know A Girl', and the wonderful 'Same Old Me' where luscious keyboard backdrops from Niklas Medin permeate throughout. A couple of fun blues workouts in 'Good Folks' and 'Give It Up' (the latter track features Edgar Winter on saxophone) give the album a good mix up variety.

In Summary
Since this album, Sko/Torp have released a couple of other albums, as well as Greatest Hits package. Soren Sko also released a solo album in 1997 in a slightly contemporary MOR style. Nonetheless, a demonstration of one of Denmarks best vocal talents. Thanks to Gregor Klee for this disc.
