Thanks for stopping by the house of GLORYDAZE Music. We're into melodic rock and AOR in a big way! If you don't know what AOR is, then you're probably at the wrong website. Anyone with a modicum of rock music knowledge going back to the lazy days of the late 60's and into the 70's up until the current day will surely feel at home here. With an excess of 5000 album reviews in the system, there is something here for the hard rock fan, prog rock supporter, or heavy metal fiend! Have a look around, and feel free to register if you want to contribute to the website, or drop us a comment or two. Cheers.. GDM

Knighton, Reggie - 1977 Reggie Knighton
ARTIST: Knighton, Reggie
ALBUM: Reggie Knighton
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN:
LINEUP: Reggie Knighton - vocals, guitars * Curly Smith - drums, percussion * Bob Glaub - bass, percussion * Billy Payne - keyboards, synthesizers
TRACK LISTING: 01 Every Night * 02 Fidelity * 03 Girl From Pluto * 04 Drug Dealer * 05 VD Got To Idi * 06 Public Servant * 07 Tricentennial Woman * 08 Glows In The Dark * 09 Jenny * 10 All Night Long
Originally from Biloxi, Mississippi, Reggie Knighton's first shot at the big time was with the pop band The Grass Roots
. You remember them, 'Temptation Eyes', 'Midnight Confessions' and many others, all required listening for serious pop music scholars. Unfortunately, the relationship didn't last long and with the hits no longer coming, fortunes waning and the tried and true 'musical differences', a break-up was inevitable and Knighton joined up with former Lovin' Spoonful
main man John Sebastian
for a lengthy tour supporting America
. It was around this time Reggie signed a deal with CBS and a star was born. Well, no not really, but on the strength of his two albums he should have been.
A unique talent, Knighton offered a quirky pop sound with humorous and at times bizarre lyrical content. His self produced debut is not your typical AOR and with titles like 'Drug Dealer' and 'VD Got To Idi', the latter an ode to African dictator and all around nut job Idi Amin, Knighton separated himself from subject matter normally associated with the genre. Musically his sense of melody is infectious, and can even get romantic and quite poppy as on 'Fidelity', a love song that should have been a hit, although to be honest, I can't ever recall hearing anything by Reggie Knighton on the radio. The world just wasn't ready for such clever pop craft, ignorantly wrapped up in disco and punk rock.
Fans of Brian Protheroe
's three albums and 10cc
, a band Knighton would support on a North American tour in 1978 will want to give this record a listen. It's definitely one of the more interesting debut albums from 1977 you will come across and while his equally excellent Roy Thomas Baker produced second album 'Reggie Knighton Band' seems to get the most attention from AOR fans, I can't recommend this release highly enough.
