This Swedish outfit have just been picked up by AOR Heaven. I saw a video of them on YouTube and liked it enough to follow up on it. I wondered whether the musical quality on that video would translate right across the album. The merits of the actual video itself are pretty dodgy it must be said, which you can see underneath this article. So, who are Sweet Mary Jane? Let's get that out of the way first and foremost.

The band originate from Sundsvall in the center-north of Sweden, with keyboardist Tomas Lasslin having a connection to an older Swedish band called Roulette, who we've written about previously at GDM when their retrospective CD 'Better Late Than Never' was issued in 2008 on AOR-FM Records. Tomas Berggren is also the brother of blues rocker and solo Steffan Berggren. Formed in 2012, 'Winter In Paradise' is the bands debut CD, with Lars Chriss (Seven) behind the production desk.

The Songs
Quality wise, I think Sweet Mary Jane are onto something here. That video track mentioned earlier was for the song 'Fire In Your Eyes', co-written with former Roulette singer Peter Lundgren. It's pretty good I'll admit. Shame about the video.. lol! When SMJ hit the high gear on 'No Retreat No Surrender' (great song-title what?), they sound great. For the title-track 'Winter In Paradise', the synths are parping away in Scandi approved certification, the whole track a terrific effort. 'Madeleine' is a tougher guitar rocker, sounding like some the recent British efforts by bands like Angels Or Kings and Serpentine. Swirly organ dominates the blues-ballad/rocker 'Miracle', but I think their forte is that guitar/synth AOR thing which is highlighted on 'Carry On' and the rather awesome 'Surrender'. Wow! Toward the end, SMJ push the accelerator on 'Don't Be Too Late', adding even more respectability.

In Summary
'Winter In Paradise' is a real surprise, and I have no hesitation giving this one a big thumbs up. When you listen to songs like 'Carry On' and 'Surrender', it won't come as a surprise to see this album mentioned somewhere toward the end of the year. Don't be put off by some of the pathetic comments written over at Rock Report for instance. Those idiots have no clue. Hear it for yourself, and make your own call. I have, I give it a 9.0, bordering on a 9.5.
