Background

This was the short-lived band The Edge from Western Pennsylvania (Meadville) featuring the active and creative guitarist and songwriter Tim Smith. Tim has played with many different bands but I'd suggest this is the one that comes closest to hard rock. Actually, 'The Edge' sits closer to the new wave and power-pop genres, not surprising considering the era in which this was released (Feb 1982).

The Songs

If anything, The Edge were remembered for their best-known track 'Clones In Love' which leads off the album. The caustic guitar gives this one 'the edge' (every pun intended) and lands it in new wave territory.

The jangly 'Oh Penny' is very lightweight power-pop while the 'The Eighties Are Mine' (cool title BTW) is a track they should have been singing about at the end of the decade rather than at the start. Great solo too I might add. 'I Can't Believe Her' comes across as mildly manic and once again the brief solo gives it that extra zing.

More lightweight power-pop comes in the shape of 'Caught Up In My TV Set', a pleasant and unassuming listen, 'Out Of My League' is the album's ballad though it does have a quirky disposition, while the title track 'The Edge' heads down hard rock highway with the guitar more prevalent.

In Summary

The band didn't last that long, it was all over after a couple of months though 'Clones In Love' made the airwaves among some radio stations along the Eastern Seaboard at the time. Tim Smith moved onto UXB later that year and then Option 30 and many other projects beyond that. Check out his Bandcamp page for more.
