Background

Without doubt, British duo LeBrock are one of the poster boys of the Synthwave movement across the globe. From our perspective, LeBrock are the closest thing to a genuine synthwave/AOR hybrid, thanks to the ever present guitars and booming vocal harmonies, something you don't hear from their keyboard/drum machine oriented peers - some of whom have been reviewed here at Glory Daze.

'Fuse' is a fully loaded eleven track album that bristles with energy and is laden with sugar encrusted goodies for you to chomp on. If you're a musical diabetic, then close your eyes, cross your heart and dive right in and don't worry about the consequences.

The Songs

Everywhere you land on this album, you'll strike a diamond. Put it on random play and prepare to be dazzled. Whether it's the opening duo of 'All Or Nothing' and 'Heartstrings' to the pairing of 'In Time' and 'Rush' at the back-end, all the songs are upbeat, and skip across the metronome with laser like precision.

I'm still spending time with the album this weekend and I'm hard pressed to name a favourite as all the songs have their own merits, but for an early call I'd put 'In Time' and 'Heartstrings' at the top of my playlist though this might change on a daily basis.

In Summary

In the washup to this review, I was bemused by some of the inane comments written by some YouTubers, who are young enough to be wearing diapers judging by the stupidity. Writing stuff like 'this is more 80's than the 80's' or 'this sounds like Skid Row meets retrowave'. Err nah. My guess is that these idiots were all born after the year 2000 so what would they know about what it was really like living in the 80's?

No question about it, to my way of reckoning, the synthwave scene has come a long way since this site first started taking an interest back in 2014/2015. This year however (2021) has seen some stellar releases, and I'd go out on a limb and state that LeBrock has struck the melodic motherload, and goes to the top of the class. In the meantime, grab this choice block of synthwave and get ready to soak up the summer sun.

In my opinion Fuse is the best Synthwave release so far in 2020.

The opening track `All Or Nothing` is a dead ringer for John Fannon`s (New England) `Way To Your Heart`. Different key (C Major as as opposed to Fannon`s in Bb) but exactly the same chord structure.

I had this feeling that these guys remind me of some other band but couldn't put a finger on it. Then last night I listened to some stuff by Vega and bam! That's who they remind me of. Vega use more guitars and a real drummer, but the overall feeling of the songs is pretty similar. And since I love Vega, this comprison means only good things for LeBrock.

I'm not as into the synth wave side of things as some, but these guys have always been great!

The Vega comparison is spot on. I pointed this out on my previous review of 2018's 'Real Thing' (click LeBrock tag above).
