Background

I've always considered the second tier of German hard rock from the 80's a worthy repository of music to investigate and research. Some would call me a sucker for punishment, and though there might be many bands that are considered derivative, there are still a handful of gems that rear their head.

Is Hunter one of those gems? At the end of the day probably not. They are not in the same league as Sinner or Steeler, both of those bands reviewed here at Glory Daze. But I'm going to give Hunter a run down anyway, and cast the ruler over the first of two albums released during the mid 80's.

The Songs

Apparently 'Sign Of The Hunter' was recorded in 10 days, the band feeding off the metal vibes of the era. The typical culprits such as Accept, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Saxon were all implicated.. Lol.

What the band lack in finesse they more than make up for it with enthusiasm. Leading off with the title track, the guitar is suitably raw and the drum work regularly gives the metronome, but the vocals let the side down. 'Nightfighter' features some riffs straight out of the Dokken playbook while the tempo is incendiary like.

Other highlights include 'Magnum 45' borrowing heavily from Bonfire's' riff based style though without the same level of melody. 'Revenge' typifies Hunter's gung-ho approach to 80's metal, there's no subtlety involved just old school stuff which some of us used to headbang to.

In Summary

The 2009 CD reissue of this album features four bonus tracks from 1983 when they were known as Redbacks as well as new cover art. Though officially splitting up in 1989, Hunter returned in 2021 with a new album 'The Return' which was released on August 6th, and featured a new rhythm section.
