Background

Canada's Emerald Rain have been around for a little while now, yet this is the first time I have sampled their wares. Well, that was my mistake. Live2K is naturally a live performance recorded at the Dungeon in Oshawa, Canada.

The track list combines material from both of their albums, along with one new track ('Your Disguise') and the previously Jap-only 'Take a Stand'. Both the live and studio versions are featured.

The Songs

From the outset this is a rocking affair and the pace only relents on two occasions with the power ballads 'Misery Loves Company' and 'Come Clean'.

Throughout the 59 minutes and 15 tracks we are treated to many memorable moments, in particular the brilliant 'Desperate Heart', 'High Road To Nowhere', and 'No Saviour'. To be honest there isn't a dud track on here.

The performances from all involved are tight and professional. I would describe Murry Daigle's vocals as being similar to Harem Scarem's Harry Hess and on the odd occassion Ten's Gary Hughes.

I have to make special mention of the guitar work by Mike Dmitrovic. Simply astonishing. Combining elements from Pete Lesperance, Vinny Burns and at times John Petrucci, Mike absolutely scorches. This is the first time in a while that a guitar performance has affected me so greatly. The tone is beautiful and you hear every note even when the solos are going flat-out.

In Summary

This album has been on heavy rotation in my cd player since the moment I got it. You can feel the energy of the live performance thanks to the bands great attitude and sound.

The production is crystal clear, a great job done by the band themselves. For those who already know and appreciate the work of Emerald Rain this album will confirm what you think - these guys have talent. For the un-initiated Live2K is the perfect way to get introduced to Emerald Rain.
