The Prince of Darkness, aka Ozzy Osbourne, may look more like an aging hippy now a-days, but his vocal style is living large in Andy Alkman, the lead singer for Hellfueled. To say he is a dead ringer is an understatement. I don't think I've ever heard someone sound so close to Ozzy.

However, Andy didn't start is singing career as an Ozzy Osbourne take-off. Hellfueled actually began life in the vein of Entombed and Cathedral. Forced to change their name not once, but twice, due to legal issues, the band finally settled on Hellfueled and also on a more classic metal sound.

During that time Andy developed his vocals from growls to what we currently hear. On the side Andy now fronts an Ozzy tribute band. Funny that. I can take Ozzy, or the Ozzy vocal sound, only so much. That goes for Hellfueled as well.

However, I find Andy much less winey than the Ozzman himself, particularly on the choruses. You can hear Zakk Wylde in the guitars, and the riffs are pretty damn heavy, but I also hear Fredrik Akesson (Talisman) and even George Lynch.

I would say that this album combines older Ozzy Osbourne with European heavy rock stylings. Add to that a teutonic production job by Fredrik Nordstrom and result is very potent.

The Songs

Getting into this album took a little while for me, due to my reservations about the Ozzy vocalising, but once you are in, it is a wild ride. Not every track kicks arse but enough do to keep the momentum going strong.

The most notable are the opener 'Can't Get Enough', 'Regain Your Crown', 'Friend', and the title track 'Born II Rock', which smokes. Looking at that I would have to say the first half of the album is stronger than the later half.

In Summary

Nonetheless the band have the goods in all departments, especially the choruses and lead attack. You may not be getting your moneys worth with Ozzy while he plays dysfunctional families and talk-show host, but you sure do with Hellfueled.
