Background

Fee Waybill is no stranger to this website thanks to his exploits with The Tubes. This represents his third solo album and his first since 1996's 'Don't Be Scared Of These Hands'. Recorded back in February 2020 alongside longtime collaborator Richard Marx, this album is both energetic and tongue-in-cheek.

The Songs

The production is rather dry, while the songs are stripped back rockers that if released between 1998 and 2003 for instance, the results could've been interesting. I do like the subject matter though. Waybill hasn't lost his ability to be sarcastic at the world, even at the media industry, so good on him for that.

Highlights for me include the lyrical pointed barbs of 'Promise Land', the new Nashville vibe of 'Still You On The Inside', the uptempo pop rock of 'How Dare You', and the 70's sounding stomp of 'Don't Want To Pull The Trigger'.

In Summary

The album duration is short by today's standards clocking in at 33 minutes, and because of its independent nature and the timing and the impact of c***d, it has flown under the radar for many during 2020.

I tend not to listen to much fare that passes for current day American radio-ready pop rock. However I would make a rare exception for this. Good to see Waybill back regardless.
