A perfect example of mid-80's Canadian AOR. Haywire are playing a smooth style, mixing elements of The Arrows, Honeymoon Suite and Loverboy.

These guys came all the way from Prince Edward Island, and progressed their career through a myriad of 'battle of the bands' contests, using the proceeds to further their cause.

It was during this phase that they recorded an EP during 1985, which was used to generate a deal with Attic Records.

The debut album 'Bad Boys', produced by Brian Allen (ex Rose, Toronto) was a great introduction to the band.

The Songs

It's primarily a high-tech but commercialised formula which is applied throughout, and can be best heard on efforts such as 'Standin' In Line', 'Out Of My Head', and 'Girl In Love'.

Their ballads and mid paced tracks are great too: 'Holding You' and 'Shot In The Dark' particularly stand out.

My favourites however are the pairing of 'Bad Bad Boy' and the bubbly 'She's Not (The Kind Of Girl)'.

A couple of the songs end up sounding very poppy, like '3 Wishes' and 'Crazy', where it could end being something like A-ha and The Arrows meeting up in a dance club!

In Summary

The follow-up album 'Don't Just Stand There' from 1987 is another great album, and should be on your wants list too.

Forget about their third and fourth efforts 'Nuthouse' and 'Get Off', which are poor by comparison.

By this stage of their career, Haywire had so totally disillusioned their fans with their musical approach being so diverse, that Attic could see the writing on the wall, and terminated the contract in 1992.

The band tried to continue on, but eventually disbanded in 1995. Three of the members moved back to Prince Edward Island where they are still playing locally.
