Background

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where these guys come from right? I hope your geography is as good as mine, Scotland ain't it? Musically though, these guys drive right through the heart of melodic hard rock territory, demonstrated with a blend of power usually associated with UK bands.

In their early days, the Glasgow boys released a three-track 12' EP called 'Under The Lights' plus a two track 7' single called 'Stranded' during 1984. For the latter, the band released this through the Neat label. Somehow I don't think their brand of melodia would have gone down too well if on a double-bill with Neat bands Venom or Raven for instance.

Both of those efforts featured original drummer Joe Kilna, though by the time this 8 track album came out, Paul McManus had replaced him. Musically the band were similar to Mammoth and Export, and though classy in its own right, perhaps on a level just below.

The boys get some keyboard assistance from the well-traveled Don Airey, so that must have been some minor coup. I can imagine these tracks would have sounded quite sparse without them!

The Songs

The lead-off track 'We Will Rock' is a primal anthemic track with the same sort of drive as the aforementioned Mammoth mixed in with a dash of AC/DC. The pumping bass returns on the hard-driving 'Back On The Run' (not exactly original song titles here eh? Ah well, at least they're not Goddo).

'My Heart Is Running With The Night' is another guitar bound rocker, and is not a ballad as the title might suggest. We move into keyboard-based territory with 'Meet Me Halfway', now this is much better. One of their older tracks 'Under The Lights' gets a rework here, sounding like early Grand Prix.

'No More Lonely Nights' has a near 'pomp' style applied to it with some nifty keyboard parps courtesy of Mr Airey, though the track does get a tad repetitive toward the end. The traditional Brit hard rock style returns on 'Breakout', slightly ploddy, especially the bass line which is hardly what we would call 'dynamic'.

In Summary

The band released this effort on their own 041 Records during 1987, while it received a larger distribution on the Sonet label in April of 1988. The album has since seen a re-release on CD.

A bouquet to guitarist Archie Dickson. It's his efforts that gave Glasgow that cutting edge, though ultimately it didn't progress very far beyond 1988. Perhaps not the raging classic that people have been emailing me about enthusiastically, but still a credible enough effort nonetheless.

I was just listening to this while on a flight the other day. Hadn't listened to it since 2008 at least. Average to decent AOR,. George's overall assessment is accurate. The song titles are classic however, hall of fame stuff.

Classic Metal Records started as a CD/Record shop and now they are reissuing many NWOBHM and 80s Metal albums. They are located in Ilhabela, an island near Sao Paulo with some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen.
