Background

Ryan Adams glory-daze are rightfully absent here being a former member of alternative country band Whiskeytown, with whom he recorded three studio albums.

Whiskeytown were heavily influenced by country-rock pioneers Gram Parsons. In 2000, Adams left Whiskeytown and released his first solo album, 'Heartbreaker', to critical acclaim.

In 2001, Adams released the UK certified-gold 'Gold', which included the hit single, 'New York, New York'. The latter pulling on the heartstrings of the flag waving flock post 911.

2005 saw Adams join with backing band The Cardinals to produce two albums, 'Cold Roses' and 'Jacksonville City Nights'. Ryan then disbanded his backing band and married former pop princess Mandy Moore.

During this time he experimented with different sounds and collaborated with a variety of artists in what appears to have been a self-discovery period. Adams became disillusioned with the music industry and even some fans, who had expected him to churn out the same self-righteous schlock he had done since the early 2000's.

In recent times, Ryan Adam's sound has become more centered in rock, which he demonstrates nicely on this self titled 2014 release.

The Songs

The opening track, 'Gimme Something Good' is reminiscent of Timothy B. Schmidt with it's breezy California sound.

Never shy about his influences, the tracks 'Feels Like Fire' and 'Trouble' venture into Jackson Browne territory.

In fact, this whole platter has a `Lawyers In Love' vibe in it's delivery - with maybe the exception of 'Shadows' and 'I Just Might', the layter sounding like a demo from Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The USA' era.

'Kim', 'Am I Safe', and 'Tired Of Giving Up', are amazing pop rock ditties and easily the album's highlights.

Rounding things out with 'Let Go' and 'My Wrecking Ball', slight throwbacks if you will to the stuff he was doing on his critically acclaimed 'Heartbreaker' release.

In Summary

Overall, you could do far worse this day and age then this collection.

Adams has also produced albums for Willie Nelson, Jesse Malin, Jenny Lewis, and Fall Out Boy, and collaborated with Counting Crows, Weezer, Norah Jones, America, Minnie Driver, Cowboy Junkies, Leona Naess, Toots and the Maytals, Beth Orton and Krista Polvere.

He has written 'Infinity Blues', a book of poems, and 'Hello Sunshine', a collection of poems and short stories.
